Slip is an intricate duet between Naarm Melbourne based sound artist Aviva Endean and dancer/choreographer Rebecca Jensen. Together they untether sound, image, and time in a layered dance work that invites the audience to consider the entanglement of all things, and the threat of falling out of sync with our histories, the natural environment, our bodies, and each other.
Central to Slip is the technique and paradox of foley art, a sound-effect technique used in film post-production to construct a sense of reality within a scene. Foley artists re-create sounds with assorted eclectic objects and body movements to synchronise with and enhance action on screen.
Slip uses the illusion of foley to address the complexity of our present reality. The spaces between action and consequence, sourcing and product, private and public, truth and marketing, digital and IRL are slippery. Through delay, dissonance, and slippage, we unwittingly de-sync. Pairings are pulled apart and abstracted, connections simplified, severed, and rewired to the point of absurdity.

Slip premiered at Darebin Arts Speakeasy as part of FRAME: A biennial of dance. This production was initially commissioned for the 2022 Keir Choreographic Award by Dancehouse, the Keir Foundation, and Australia Council for the Arts, with presenting partner Carriageworks. Further development was supported by Lucy Guerin Inc ‘Moving Forward’ Residency, and the Chloe Munro Fellowship. This tour is supported by Creative New Zealand.
